10 Facts About Cronus
  • Cronus was the youngest son out of 12. His parents were Uranus (god of the Sky) and Gaia (mother Earth). His siblings were Oceanus (god of water), Coeus (god of intelligence and wisdom), Crius, (god of leadership) Hyperion (god of light), Iapetus (god of Mortality), Cronus (god of time and age), Theia (goddess of sight), Rhea (mother of all the Olympian gods), Themis (goddess of law and order), Mnemosyne (goddess of remembrance), Phoebe (goddess of Moon) and Tethys(goddess of fresh water).

  • Cronus helped his mother (Gaia) to harm her husband (Uranus) and Cronus cut off a body part (genital). Gaia was mad at Uranus because when she had Cyclopes (giants) Hecatonchires (creatures that had 50 heads and 100 arms) he made them go back into her stomach and she had to carry them around. Uranus’ blood created Aphrodite (goddess of love and beauty) and many other nasty offspring.

  • Cronus married his sister Rhea (mother of gods). They had 6 children Demeter (goddess of harvest), Hestia (the goddess that protects families and homes), Hera (goddess of marriage) Hades (god of the dead) Poseidon (was the god of the sea, earthquakes and horses) Zeus (god of the sky).

  • Whenever Rhea had children Cronus would eat them because of a prophecy. Uranus told Cronus that one of his children would over power him. Rhea was upset so when she had her last child Zeus she sent him to an island Crete. She gave Cronus a rock wrapped in a cover and he ate it without noticing that it was not a baby.

  • When Zeus got older and was trained he gave his father a drink that made him throw up the other children. They thought of a good plan of how to kill Cronus. Zeus got his siblings and Cyclopes to start a war with Cronus. Zeus won the battle called Titanomachy. It was against mainly the Titians and Olympian gods. Zeus and his allies (siblings, Cyclopes and Hecatonchires) fought from Mt. Olympus. Cronus and his allies (the Titians) fought from Mt. Othrys.

  • Cronus is associated with the Roman god Saturn. Saturn is a god of harvest and corn similar to Demeter. Saturnalia was festival that was celebrated starting December 17th and lasted for seven days. This festival was really important everyone was nice to each other they would visit each other and give gifts. All the slaves were allowed to sit at the table with the family and were served by their masters.

  • When Cronus and Rhea first started to rule the world they didn’t have any laws because all the gods knew what they were allowed to do and what they couldn’t do. This peaceful time was called the golden age because everything was peaceful.

  • The sickle symbolizes Cronus in pictures. He always holds it in his hand. In Greek Mythology we see it two times. The first time was when Gaia gave Cronus the sickle to cut Uranus. The second time was when Zeus stool that sickle and cut Cronus into many small pieces and threw him to the Underworld (Tartarus).

Color and Music Explanation
I used dark colors because Cronus was a really angry god. He had a hard life where he experianced fear all the time. When finally he was over thrown he became a "citizen" of the underworld.
My music starts out calm that represents the beginging of Cronus' life before his mother asked him to hurt his father. Then the music is really rough that shows his feelings when he over threw his father and heard his prophecy. He got married and was having a good life for a while. Later everything went upside down and he was over thrown by his son and the loud noise at the end represents that everything was over for him.
